After finally really enjoying one of these prequels, Ladle Rat Rotten Hut, this installment was a major disappointment.

The editing is no longer a cause of frustration. But the story itself was.

It was mostly told, not shown. So I couldn't really connect with any of these characters. They were all kept at a distance, and even though this was the darkest of the prequels, I could have cared less about finishing this one, even though it was only about 29 pages.

I once again struggled with the dialogue. I just couldn't connect it with the characters. Here is an example:

"How come I don't know about that stuff? I am freakin' Lucifer."

"Because you spent your time hatin' not participatin'" Rumpelstiltskin said. *

(sigh)

No.... Just No.....

Unfortunately, this is very likely the last review I will write on the Grimm series, because it is very likely the last one I will read.

I sincerely thank the author for his generosity in extending the free promotional news my way.

Though I recognize the originality, the execution of it is just not calling out to me to continue any further.

It is time for me to move on.

Mary Mary Quite Contrary A Grimm Prequel The Grimm Diaries Book 5 edition by Cameron Jace Danielle Littig Children eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed this book and all of the Grimm Diaries prequels. I read this book and all of the other prequels in an hour flat, maybe less. This book was interesting, it flowed nicely, and I can't wait for the Grimm Diaries books to arrive. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fairy tales, fantasy, and the fine line between who's bad and who's good.
I really like how the author weaves together fact and fiction - fairy tales, mythology, nursery rhymes and true history. This one didn't really do it for me writing-wise - the Devil sounded very immature and inauthentic (something that has been the case with other characters but I wrote it off as their age or life experience, but this is the Devil we're talking about, I expected more). But, the plot was strong and enjoyable, albeit slightly silly in places.
hooked
This one was pretty dark. It has the devil as the narrator and the story is of Mary who just happens to kill sacrifice young maidens. I liked how much research went into the telling of this story. Which is based on something that is sort of true. Diffently made me look up Mary and these things after reading this.
I liked how the author was able to bring in Elizabeth bathory into the story. I have always been interested in her story, especially since she was a real person.
This series has potential but the writer needs to take a few creative writing classes as well as some basic high school English courses. I don't know the demographic these were written for but I'm guessing it's the 12-15 year old crowd.

They are painful to read with the amount of typos going on. These books have not been edited at all. How he thinks charging for this is reasonable, I'll never know..even at $.99.

Of the six prequels so far, Ladle Rat Rotten Hut (A Grimm Diaries Prequel #4) is far and away the best of the lot.

As I said, the premise is good. The stories could be great. I mean, really great if they were written by a "real" writer with basic writing, grammar and language skills, unfortunately they are not. I do not understand why the characters speak in 21st century slang. It doesn't make sense that they would which is why I have to believe these were written specifically to the tween and young teen set.

I wouldn't say don't read them, I'd just say be prepared to suffer through typos, bad formatting and no editing at all. If you are a grammar snob, be prepared to bleed.
The story line was good as usual but I had a hard time reading due to the fact that the time kept on switching in the book, or referring to a time in future that didn't happen yet. For example, the Devil found a mirror that hasn't been invented yet. He wanted to go to earth so he dressed up as John Wayne and ended in the 1600's. Okay so if glass mirrors haven't been invented yet then how does he know about John Wayne. Just little issues like this brought the Star rating down. Even though I really want to give it a two star I gave it a three since I like twisted fairy tales.
