Being an Indian and having travelled a bit into the rural India, I have always been fascinated by the energy and enthusiasm of the rural Indian. The average urban Indian is bored, boring and nervous, but the average rural Indian is cheerful and full of energy as you can read from this book.
Indira Gandhi once said "India lives in its villages !". Though she was obviously eyeing the huge vote banks of the rural India, what she said is a fact indeed. :-)
I had heard about this book years ago and have been looking around for it ever since. I was surprised when I found it on... I did enjoy reading it, though I couldn't help noticing that the story flows rather abruptly at times and rather slowly at other times. Still I must say, Heather Wood has done a wonderful job. Sometimes it looks like she gets a little carried away with her characters.

Thirdclass Ticket Penguin Travel Library Heather Wood Beryl Saunders 9780140095272 Books Reviews

I first read this book many years ago. A vivid picture of rural India in transit between the old and the new is drawn in words when a young Western woman traveller is taken into the group due to an accident outside her, or their, control.

This book will hold the attention of any reader with even the most superficial interest in India, and will bring back memories of those readers more familiar with the environment she finds herself in. Well recommended for anyone!
My favourite book of all time, I felt part of their journey, truly wonderful. My copy is so worn as I just had to let people read this book for themselves sadly the book is so very difficult to get hold off. It would make the most marvellous film, come on you directors and producers READ IT!
I read this book many years ago---found it in a Pakistan bookstore. I loved it then and have re-read it.

Now I'm completing two plus months of traveling around central and south India---traveling mainly by government buses and I've thought of the book many times. It is as accurate as could be then, I think, and likely now as well. I'm ready for yet another reading.

I am so grateful for her efforts in this area. A must read for anyone interested in India.
This book is one of the best books I have ever read and have wanted to own it for quite a while. This copy, and it was not is the comments about it, is a very small print verison.
exquisite writing, worth reading in lieu of travelling to India, or as a preparation for a trip there.
probably one of the best books about India I have read - traveled 3rd class rail, so I can relate to it......
An absolutely amazing story - we would never get the insight that this book provides by simply going to India, which I’ve done many times. I now see the rural people of India differently - with more compassion and understanding.
