As one raised in a Christian religion who is dismayed by the ways in which a faith of love and compassion has been twisted to become a tool for hatred and bigotry, I was dubious about reading a book that, on a superficial reading of its premise, seemed not to be one I would enjoy.

Something, though, made me discard my own prejudices, and after a few pages, I was happily lost in a world with complex and engaging characters and spiritual premises that were revealing and inspiring.

The author handles her large cast deftly and gives each character a strongly individual voice. When I finished the book, I didn't want to say good-bye to them and went on to the next in the series.

I understand that there will be two more books in the series, and I look forward to reading them.

Overall Feedback From the first stage you want to punch Cooper in the nose but something tells you to just keep your fist to the side for now. You end up taking this "Faith" journey with him and somewhere along the way he becomes your friend and you are trying to defend him and make others forgive. Throughout the story I found myself wrapped up tight with the humor, wit and sicerity of Cheryl's writing. This is truly a story for the masses.

Point of View You experience several characters point of view throughout the book as this is told from the author-looking-in point of view but for the most part you see things through Cooper. Again Cheryl is masterful in her writing and she was able to trolly me from character to character. The only issue I found was that sometimes I wanted to skip ahead because I did not like the character and therefore did not care what they had to say. That tells me that Cheryl has outstanding talent seeing that she was able to cause a reader to not care what a fictional character thought.

Voice If I was a gambling man I would say that either the author or someone close to the author has mad a "Faith" journey as well and this is the written version.

Character Development As stated in point of view, Cheryl has outstanding capabilties in character development. She was able to get me from unwanting and even closed off toward Cooper to defending him. She had me wanting to skip parts of the book only because I did not like the character and therefore did not care what they had to say.

Plot Everyday someone falls into a journey of faith and is reborn.

Dialogue I felt right at home with the characters dialogue. I am from a small town in the midwest and these characters could have been neighbors.

Pacing Cheryl is able to get the point across, stamped your emotions but still compel the reader throughout the story.

Setting You will want to visit this town, whether for good deeds or bad would be up to you. I really want to go to a bar named Bass Turds.

Continuity I did not find one iota of a issue and Cheryl lets the reader go with just enough to make them want to continue the series. I know I do. Preach on Cooper.
I had much the same experience as C. M. Barrett. I was so turned off by the name of the bar, "Bass Turds", I came very close to deleting the book before I read any further than that. My first thought was, "Oh, boy, grade school level potty humor."

I'm not sure why I read on, but I came to like the book very much and have now bought the second in the series. It's rare to find Christian fiction that is both meaningful and humorous and I'm now looking forward to reading the whole series, and perhaps some of the author's other books.

As for the name of the bar, I hope the author will pause before doing anything like this again. The name of the bar really doesn't add anything to the books in the long run and in fact gets rather annoying after being repeated dozens of times. Otherwise, I think she's an outstanding writer.
I usually stay away from "inspirational" fiction, finding it much too preachy for my taste. I was dubious for the first few pages, unsure if I was going to continue reading or not. Then I got caught up in the lives of all the interesting and quirky people in town, and I couldn't put it down. When Cooper Moon decides God wants him to change his life and build a church, he stops his womanizing and sets about the job he feels God has given him, even though he has no money and is struggling with resisting the women who throw themselves at him. What happens then changes the lives of everybody he is connected with. As unlikely as it seems, Cooper's turn to God influences others. This isn't Cooper's story alone, but also the story of other townspeople, written with humor and 'real life'.

I disagree with the commenter who thinks that because a reviewer said Cheryl Shireman is "a cool lady" that the reviewer knows the author personally. I hadn't even heard of Shireman before reading this book, and I think she is a cool lady, too. I can tell from her writing.

I, too, abhor 'cliff hangers', that is, books that leave you up in the air at the end, supposedly forcing the reader to buy the next book to see what happens. This book doesn't really do that. The focus of this novel is Cooper Moon's church, and the book ends with that. What it does not do is tie up the threads of everybody else in town. The author could have done so, of course, but it would have either cut those stories short or evolved into an extremely long book. The stories of others, I'm sure, will play out in subsequent novels. I'm looking forward to readying those.
