This is one of *those* kinds of romances where the hero and heroine are in nearly constant danger, and yet every other paragraph they are taking time out inside of their heads to lust after each other. “Oh, isn’t he so muscular and sexy? Oh, isn’t he so BIG? Oh, I want to be with him so bad, but I shouldn’t.” The constant lust-thoughts became a broken record that lost all power to motivate the reader to feel the same by only several chapters in. The only good part was that at least the author waited for a break in the action before she had these two actually sleep together.

Although I wasn’t captivated by the love story, and the sex scenes were snoozers, I was occasionally drawn in by the action. But here, too, these scenes became too much and were too unrealistic (like everyone else, I read romance for escapism, but even so, if a book is too unreal, I’m taken out of the story and then the appeal is lost). After about the fourth time Boone saved Kate from death (and once from actually dying), it got kind of ridiculous for me.

As far as the heroine goes, I didn’t think she was well-depicted as an FBI agent. “That’s why the FBI suits me so well. I like being part of something structured and organized and controlled.” Kate “tells” the reader this about herself, but Newbury fails to “show” us. Kate’s FBI-ness never came through in her POV (perhaps a more staccato way of thinking? Or an over-analytical way of looking at her surroundings? No. Nothing). She sounded like anyone else.

This books gets an average rating from me because it was decently written (nothing innovative or creative: standard fare, like I said), and the hero had to deal with a unique challenge. The chapter where he described what happened to him while he was a prisoner was pretty harrowing, and I give the author props for pulling that off.

I suppose this book could be diverting if you’re not looking for anything extra-special. Enough other people seemed to have liked it…I just appreciate authors who take risks in their writing and turn the romance genre on its head. Newbury didn’t do this, and so I wasn’t rushing to get to this book at the end of the day.

Alaska Wild Helena Newbury 9781541166578 Books Reviews

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Kate Lydecker is an FBI agent. A buttoned up, by the book fed in Alaska investigating a series of attacks on women related to a case she's been working on. In a twist of fate, Kate finds herself in the company of Boone. Boone is being transported for prosecution, along with a few other people, some more dangerous than others. Kate and Boone find themselves working together. Soon they are stranded in the cold, frozen forest being hunted by mercenaries, all the while ignoring their mounting attraction toward each other.
Kate is strong, smart and unstoppable. She will do anything to help the man who would risk all for her.
Boone is a total bad a$$ ! He's pulled himself off the ledge numerous times to save the only thing that matters to him.
Good thing for Kate. She has a strong, very capable, ex SEAL to protect and take care of her.....and protect and take care of her is exactly what he does!
WELL WRITTEN, RIVETING STORYLINE FULL OF ACTION AND ADVENTURE ! ! ! ONE WILD RIDE !
INTENSE, UNDENIABLE CHEMISTRY TURNS INTO FULL ON, UNADULTERATED PASSION ! ! ! AS SOON AS YOU READ HELENA'S DESCRIPTION OF BOONE, YOU WILL BE HOOKED ! ! ! DEFINITE ONE-CLICK MATERIAL ! ! !
I absolutely loved this book!

This is my first book by this author and she didn't disappoint me. Right now I would like to close the book and read it again. Why? It’s not only the perfect mix between adventure and romance but it’s the fact that this author succeeded until the end of the book to literally uphold the tension! Yes, elements supporting the suspense were injected and fully integrated into the storyline until the last chapters of the book. Perfect! Needless to say that the suspense part created depth and meaning by criticizing the justice system. Again, this wasn't elaborated at the expense of the plot but masterly integrated into the storyline and created an exciting background for the events to develop.

The main characters were great together and by themselves. Usually I'm not moved by insta love but in this case it just worked perfectly. The hero wasn't flawless but I liked how he re-discovered himself and how he fought for the woman he loved and their common future. The heroine, on the other hand, was more than worthy and I appreciated that this wasn't a damsel in distress but a woman who fought for her cause and the man she loved. Great!

One could argue that at certain points the plot was a bit too exaggerated…….OK. But isn't this what fiction is about? In any case, I “overlooked” these passages and was greatly rewarded with very emotionally written feelings and many hours of great reading pleasure!
